3D structure for cultured meat
Creating realistic 3D structure for laboratory-grown meat has been a technical challenge, partly because of the difficulty in getting oxygen to the cells in the middle of a piece of cultured tissue. However, Israeli startup Aleph Farms says it may have the solution.
CEO Didier Toubia claims that Aleph Farms grow together four different types of cell - muscle, fat, blood vessels and connective tissue - to create a more realistic 3D texture. It’s not clear whether the blood vessel tissue actually contributes to oxygen transport. Aleph Farms also claimed to have found an alternative to foetal bovine serum in the growth medium, but did not give details.
The Middle-East is a transcontinental region centered on Egypt and Western Asia. Its economies range from the very poor (such as Gaza and Yemen) to the extremely wealthy (such as oil-supported Qatar and United Arab Emirates). Most of the region has a hot, dry climate. Early settled agriculture originated in the Middle-East: it is the centre of origin and diversity of several major cereal and legume crops, and is the site of sheep and goat domestication. Large rivers provide irrigation to support agriculture in certain areas such as the Nile Delta in Egypt and the Tigris and Euphrates watersheds of Mesopotamia.
