Countries reach for food security while reducing agriculture's climate costs

This CCAFS blogpost by Timm Tennigkeit and Andreas Wilkes argues that agriculture is a major driver of deforestation, but offers great mitigation potential if managed properly. The authors’ recently released research report finds that emission reduction approaches can also be cost competitive.

The argument is that many developing countries now see low-emissions development strategies as a promising route to achieving sustainable growth, while also protecting their natural capital. The authors give the example of Brazil’s Agro-Energy Plan which supports mitigation activities aiming at improving agricultural efficiency and trade competitiveness, as well as  agricultural mitigation activities in Mexico that work to reduce the drivers of deforestation..

While some of the food system challenges facing humanity are local, in an interconnected world, adopting a global perspective is essential. Many environmental issues, such as climate change, need supranational commitments and action to be addressed effectively. Due to ever increasing global trade flows, prices of commodities are connected through space; a drought in Romania may thus increase the price of wheat in Zimbabwe.
