Report: Climate change & food systems: Assessing impacts and opportunities
This report by the Meridian Institute brings together existing information about climate change impacts and opportunities for climate adaptation and mitigation into a food systems framework.
The report uses a systems thinking approach to identify areas where intervention in the food system could lead to transformation, and discusses incremental methods of mitigating climate change. It emphasises the importance of stages in the food supply chain other than agriculture, such as agrochemical production, food processing, packaging, refrigeration, diets and waste management. Three case studies are used to demonstrate effects across the food system: diets, carbon pricing and soil carbon sequestration.

While some of the food system challenges facing humanity are local, in an interconnected world, adopting a global perspective is essential. Many environmental issues, such as climate change, need supranational commitments and action to be addressed effectively. Due to ever increasing global trade flows, prices of commodities are connected through space; a drought in Romania may thus increase the price of wheat in Zimbabwe.
