WRAP report: Food waste levels in the UK

WRAP has just published an assessment of how food waste levels have changed historically in the UK, and the potential impact of a range of ‘exogenous’ factors (such as population growth) and interventions (such as voluntary agreements with the food industry and campaigns such as Love Food Hate Waste) on food waste levels in the future (to 2025).

This analysis was commissioned to provide a robust evidence base to inform discussions around the potential to further reduce food waste in the UK, in the light of proposed (non-binding) EC aspirational targets for a 30% reduction of food waste. This research seeks to provide not only an indication of what may be possible, but also an assessment  the costs and benefits associated with this, and a sense of how challenging this may be.

This analysis will also inform the development of a proposed successor agreement to the Courtauld Commitment. Any future successor agreement would aim to deliver further reductions in food waste in addition to wider resource efficiency benefits, across the UK, to Governments, businesses, communities and individuals.

Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering just over 10 million square kilometres or 6.8% of the global land area, but it is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of around 740 million people or about 11% of the world's population. Its climate is heavily affected by warm Atlantic currents that temper winters and summers on much of the continent. In the European Union, farmers represent only 4.7% of the working population, yet manage nearly half of its land area.
